Naming Teeth: The FDI System

Once you know the four tooth shapes, dentists also need a precise way to refer to one exact tooth. In Australia, dentists use the FDI numbering system, where every tooth gets a two-digit code:

[01]

The first digit tells you the quadrant of the mouth (1 = upper right, 2 = upper left, 3 = lower left, 4 = lower right).

[02]

The second digit tells you the tooth's position, counting outward from the front (1 = the innermost incisor, up to 8 = the very back molar/wisdom tooth).

Dental Imaging

Dental X-rays use small amounts of radiation to capture detailed images of the inside of teeth and jawbone. These scans show structures that can't be seen just by looking in someone's mouth.

Common conditions seen in dental exams and X-Rays include:

Dental caries (cavities):

Decay that shows up as a dark shadow in the enamel or dentine. Look for radiolucent patches, especially between teeth or under old fillings.

Impacted teeth:

A tooth that hasn't come through properly, often wisdom teeth. Can appear angled or trapped under the gum line on an X-ray.

Gum disease (periodontal disease):

Inflammation and infection of the gums, sometimes spreading to the bone. Look for redness, swelling, bleeding, and deeper-than-normal gum pockets.

Cracked tooth:

A fracture line through the tooth structure. Can be subtle and easy to miss without a close look or a bite test.
